Resolve Sage 200 Errors by Clearing Temporary Files and AppData
If you’re getting errors such as ‘An Unexpected Exception Error Has Occurred’ when opening or using Sage 200, you may need to clear some files from your device.
In this tip of the week, we’ll show you how to clear your Temp files and AppData.
Error Messages
Here are a few example screenshots of the errors you might be seeing:

When you use any programme, whether that’s Sage, Word or Excel, it creates a number of temporary files on your PC. This makes sure that you don’t lose any information. Sometimes, if your PC crashes or Sage crashes, then the files can become damaged.
Let’s have a look at how you can fix the error messages.
Clearing Temp Files
Before you begin, make sure Sage and any Sage error messages have been closed.
Now, let’s see if we can clear any old temporary files.
Open ‘File Explorer’ (represented by a yellow folder icon within your toolbar).
In the search bar, type ‘%temp%’ and press ‘Enter’ on your keyboard.

You should be taken to your local temp folder.
As you can see here, it has taken us into a subfolder named ‘4’ within the temporary folder. If yours is the same, go back one step by clicking ‘Temp’ in the file path.

This is where all the temporary files are living at the moment. They’ve got random names and we can’t tell which ones are related to Sage, but temp files normally get removed after you’ve done processes, so the best thing to do is try clearing them down.
Select all the files by holding the ‘Ctrl’ key and press ‘A’ on your keyboard. Then press the ‘Delete’ key on your keyboard.

If any of the files or folders are in use, you’ll get this error message ‘The action can’t be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program’.
Tick ‘Do this for all current items’ and press ‘Skip’.
This means any files that are currently open won’t be removed.

Important Note: If you’re unsure about this, contact your IT support or email sagesupport@pkfscs.co.uk.
Clearing Sage 200 AppData
Let’s have a look to see if there are any other files related to Sage that could cause a problem.
Following on from where we were in the ‘File Explorer’ in the last section, click ‘AppData’ in the file path near the top of the window.

You should have 3 folders – ‘Local’, ‘LocalLow’ and ‘Roaming’.
Double click the ‘Roaming’ folder to open it.

Next, double click the ‘Sage’ folder.

Sometimes, files in here can get corrupted.
‘Right Click’ the Sage 200 folder with your mouse and click ‘Rename’.
Add a hyphen ‘-‘ and either add ‘old’ or today’s date and press ‘Enter’ on your keyboard.
The files will be recreated when you next open Sage.

Now open your Sage system.
As you can see, Sage is loading up successfully without any error messages.

Reopen the ‘File Explorer’ and go back to AppData > Roaming > Sage.
Here, you’ll see it has recreated the file that we renamed.

Go back to AppData > Local > Temp > 4. Here you’ll see it has created more temporary files.
