How to Import a Budget in Sage Intacct

There are multiple ways to add a budget in Sage Intacct, including manually, using the Budgeting and Planning add-on or via file import.

In this tip of the week, we’ll show you everything you need to know about importing a budget via file import, including where to find the template, how to complete it and where to upload it.

Where to Find The Budget Template

To find import templates in Sage Intacct, navigate to:

Applications > Company > Setup > Import data

Next, scroll down to the ‘Budgets’ row. To download the template, click ‘Template’.

Once downloaded, open the file in Microsoft Excel.

Completing The Budget Template

Along the top row you’ll see headers for each column.

These match the fields in Sage Intacct which you’d complete if you added a budget manually.

Below that in row 2 you’ll see everything you need to help you complete the information.

This includes details such as: character limits, valid values, dependencies, if the field is required and whether it will be editable.

Then fill in the details, such as account number to tag a specific GL account, dimension ID if you want to tag specific locations or departments, etc.

Right at the end (see screenshot) is where you input your budget values. Note: in the budgetable period column, make sure you match this to the name of the reporting budget.

For this next step, we’ll look at the import template and Sage Intacct side by side so we can double check exactly how the information is named in the system. In Sage Intacct, navigate to:

Company > Budgets > Budgets repository

The budget ID needs to match what is in the system, so we advise copying and pasting it to make sure it matches exactly. In this case, it’s ‘2025 Budget’.

Uploading The Finished Budget

Once you’ve finished adding all your information to the template, save it as a csv file and make sure any fields with leading zeros are re-formatted so that the file will import smoothly.

On the Budgets repository page in Sage Intacct, press ‘Import’.

Now click ‘Choose File’ and find the file you saved. You can import multiple at once if you like.

Select the correct date format from the ‘Date format’ dropdown, this should match the template and your system setup.

Finally, click ‘Import’.

This pop up will let you know the number of successful or unsuccessful imports.

You’ll get an email which goes into more detail about any errors, why the error occurred and what you can do to rectify it.
