Here’s a reminder to backup your data!
The idea for World Backup Day originated in 2011, after an accident on reddit where a user lost an important hard drive and wished they had been reminded to backup their data. World Backup Day is now celebrated annually on March 31st, and serves as a reminder to protect our precious data.
While it may not have been the end of the world for that user, this is not the case for businesses in today’s ecosystem. Backing up your systems is critical for organisations of all sizes and is something that should be taken seriously by individuals and companies. According to the UK Government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2024, 45% of medium-sized businesses faced cybercrime in the last year. The effects of cybercrime can be devastating and can result in significant financial losses. In 2024 alone, UK businesses experienced approximately 7.8 million cybercrimes, as reported by the same survey.
In this article, we’ll highlight the ways you can back up across different devices, including your phone and computer, and the importance of doing this to protect your personal data.
What is a backup?
A backup is a copy of all your important files, such as documents, emails and photos. Rather than storing everything in one place, like your computer or smartphone, a backup ensures that a copy of your data is kept somewhere else. This small action can save you from potential disaster if something goes wrong with your device.
Backing up your data is crucial, as data loss can happen for many reasons, often unexpectedly. Whether it’s a system crash, a virus, cyber attack, or even a device theft, having a backup ensures your data is recoverable.
